Two down....one more to go!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would like to run 100 miles.

Personal:

I've got two wonderful kids who are 6 and 8.  I want to pass on the joy of running.

These next couple of weeks start a new page in several areas of life.  This week I wrap up my work at my current job and next week I start on something totally different than I am accustom. YIKES!

Today I start day 1 of a 30 week training program for the "Mother Road 100" on Nov 13-14.  I'm going to follow this training plan: http://www.trailrunevents.com/ul/schedule-100m.htm .  Day one of week one...run 2 miles.  Done.  So far it is a piece of cake.

Happpy Running!

Very nice evening run. Lots of gnats.  Since I swallowed a couple I was wondering what food group they would fall under?  Protein?

Also, the Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50 mile race is almost full.  The marathon is closed.  Sign up soon: http://www.theboogieraces.com/BOOGIEINFOPAGE.html . This is a fun race ... but it is also hot, humid, and hilly.  Last year someone requested to the RD that he let just one more person into the race so that he could practice for the Bad Water ultra.  Needless to say he was not refused.  I've been told I'm a little bit weird but those Bad Water folks are just plain nuts! ... and of course I'm a bit envious.  I don't see myself ever pushing those limits!  Nevels, I'll be your crew when you go out there.

Granite grinder half marathon + 1 extra mile.

This is a great race.  It's the 3rd time I've run it.  Apparently I keep forgetting how tough it is until after I hit the finish line.  This time I ran with my running partner's 19 y\o daughter.  We had a 2 hour drive and I was told that she like really old music like that from the 80's.  Sigh.  To my credit I didn't push her out the door after that comment.  Can I really be old??  Nah!

The first half of the race lulls you into a bit of an ego trip where you think, wow, it's not so tough.  I can do this!  I really am wonder woman.  Then you run over to the other side of the park and it is a totally different story.  Hills, rocks, granite slabs that you run up, creek crossings, mud eating shoes.  I tried to hold my little friend back some during the early miles but the second half still had a way of kicking our bum.  I tried to teach her that when things get bad/feel bad then try to "embrace the suck".  She of course thought I was nuts....not an original thought.

We cross the finish line and have a great finish line picture of us jumping for joy.

This race has a great post race party.  This year they went above and beyond.  Some mexican food joint was a sponsor and supplied the best chips, salsa, huge chicken burritos.  I'm all about food after a hard race and this totally hit the spot....as did the beer of course. :)

All of this fun was followed up with a 2 hour drive back listening to the "oldies" on the radio. ha!

I really didn't thing I had any miles in me today after yesterdays trail run. I had 8 miles on tonight's schedule but at 10:15PM I decided to call it a night before the hubby got too freaked out about me still being out.   Still, I felt stronger than I thought I would have during the entire run.

This week's schedule...

Monday: off - very nice

Tues: 4 miles

Wed: 8 miles

Thur: 6 miles

Friday: Off

Sat: 16 mile

Sun: 8 miles

Total weekly mileage: 42

I'm pretty confident I can hit those marks except for Wed.  I'm not sure I'll have any free time in one chunk to do all those miles.  Perhaps I can split it up into 4 in the AM and 4 in the PM

I have been reading about the pushup/situp/pullup blog challenge that fast running bloggers are trying and writing about.  What a challenge!  http://Samantha.fastrunningblog.com/blog--No-run-day-I-am-seeing-my-physio-early/04-07-2010.html

I think I'd die trying all 3 at the same time so I'll opt for the 200 sit-ups.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Up and running by 4:30 AM.  I wanted to be sure to finish the run AND have family time tonight. I've decided that my Tues and Wed runs will be in the awful hours of pre-dawn.

I finally got out the door around 8:30 this evening.  The run was really nice as I've not heard this one bird for several months now.  A whip-poor-will?  Anyways, it was just nice to hear it once again.  The toads are out all over the road.  As I was running something caught my eye and spooked me as it darted away.....a rabbit.  It startled the bee-gee-bees out of me.  I had to laugh as it reminded me of some old monty python movie where a killer white rabbit was taking out everyone.  Search for the holy grail perhaps?

I have 16 on schedule to day and 8 for tomorrow.  I had decided to leave my house early and run the 9.5 miles down to a 5K that my friend was the RD.  I'd run the race and then run back.  The goal was to knock both days out in one run.  Sadly, yesterday I was knocked out on my bum with something not quite so bad as the flu.  I woke up 3:15 AM feeling even worse.  I spent most of the day in bed.

One more day of feeling like poop.  I feel like I probably could at least do 3-5 miles but might just fall on my face somewhere along the roadside.

Week 2 recap:

Tues: 0 miles

Wed: 8 miles

Thur 6: miles

Sat & Sun: 0 miles

I think it is safe to say that this week was a total wash in terms of training!  I'll try this again next week.  Tues-4, Wed-8, Thur-6, Sat-16, Sun-8

5:30 AM - Although it was toooooo early to be out running I'm really glad to have the free time at night to enjoy my family.

So far Week 3 is on schedule

4:30 AM - I will no longer make a negative comment about 5:30 AM being too early.  I have noticed that I run slower in the morning than in the evening.

It is odd how I can run in my neighborhood post 10 PM in my neighborhood and feel safe yet first thing in the morning I'm paranoid like crazy.  I read somewhere that assults happen just as frequently in the early morning runs as the late night runs.  It must be the lack of coffee.  My brain must be making up reasons for me to be back home with a cup of java in hand.

8 miles were on schedule today but only 7 miles were accomplished.

Finally, an evening run!!!  Yippie!!!

One of my Saturday morning running partners came over to join me on my 6 miler today.  We decided to do a couple of miles off road on a trail by my house.

I wish all runs felt as great as they did today.  The weather is amazing, the neighborhood is still blooming with flowers and looks beautiful (which you can't see at 5:30AM), and the company was outstanding.  The pace seemed comfortable and easy.  Now I remember why I do this!

6 miles on the schedule ... 6 miles accomplished!  Sweet!!!
