I think I said I was going to blog more to run more.  Well, the good news is that I'm running but I can't always access this site from work....when I normally blog.  (side note...I will never give my boss this URL).

I'm working with a Colonel to get him in shape enough to pass his 1.5 mile run for his PT test.  When I got to the gym I noticed that I packed everything BUT my running shoes.  oops.  So when we met at the inside track I came out in my socks with the explanation that bare foot running helps with running form.   Well, I read that in the book Born to Run and it sounded better than, "oops, forgot my shoes".

The colonel and I run 20 min. I do just a few more indoor laps just becuase I want to run an even 2  miles.

For the record, I did actually have a great running posture when running in just my socks.  Also, I now have incredibly sore calves. Hopefully the sorness will be gone or near gone by Saturday for our local marathon.

For anyone around that is looking for an inexpensive marathon or half this weekend in middle GA please come join us at the Museum of Aviation Marathon.

Welcome back to the blog. I can access the site from work, but it freaks out on me for some reason and I get a lot of page not found errors and stuff. It works fine for me at home.

That's nice of you to help out the Colonel.

Two miles might have been a little far to go if it was your first time running barefoot. Running barefoot changes your form and uses some muscles differently than you do when you run with shoes, namely the calves. That's a common area to get sore when you first try barefoot running. I hope your calves feel better by Saturday, but I can't predict whether they will be or not.

Good to see you back.

Missed you this weekend at the marathon (it was a wee bit chilly, though). The Museum of Aviation Marathon looks like fun, but I've already got a commitment to work a youth retreat this weekend (and a marathon the week before Mt. Mist is just probably a bad idea).

In any case, good luck this weekend. I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes...

I went out with a friend who **says** she nearly never runs.  That short little woman has the most beautiful and effortless stride that I've only seen when watching the olympics on TV.

I foresee me doing tempo workouts during her easy pace workouts when we run together in the future.

You know, I really enjoy the postiive upbeat people I meet when I run!!

I love this race.  It is small and only 5 miles from home.  The local running club can be found working the aid stations, taking the official pictures, or running along side you.  It really makes for an awesome experience.

The race start was delayed due to some traffic backup getting into the museum parking lot.  It was raining so I guess it caused some delays.

I took off with 2 of my regular Saturday running buddies Pruette and Deb.  Pru was doing the full and Deb was doing the half.  The race started and we were off.  We generally stick together in races so I was really surprised when Pru led the group with a 10K pace.  We stuck with him for about 5 miles.  Knowing I couldn't keep that pace for 26 miles I said my farewells.  (He does this in training runs and I pick him up about 10 miles later down the road.)

So Deb and I are off on our own.  We pick up a few people along the way.  A few of them are doing their first half marathon.  It is always fun to talk to people doing thier first race.  I love seeing people having such joy for the huge accomplishment they just achieved.

The marathon turn around is .1 mile from half finish.  Deb and I say our good byes and I start my second loop in the rain.  I have one mission....catch Pru.  As I start on the next loop I hear someone cheering.  There is Pru with a half medal around his neck and waving.  Well so much for goals.  I head out anyway wishing I had an iPod.

There is nothing really exciting to mention about the second loop except for the aid station workers.  I heard a description that seemed to fit perfectly.  They had a "chic-fillet" attitude....very cheerful and positive for people hanging out in a tent pavilion in the rain.  I had to stop and say hi at each station....mostly just to have a break from the rain.

I finally found my way to the finish line.  A team of 5 people were left to oversee the finishers: the RD, the photographer and his wife, and the 2 folks doing the chip timing.  I had my own personal cheer squad. Nice. :)

Odd how cold you get when you are done running and soaked to the bone. I went home and soaked in nice hot bath.  It didn't do much for recovery but felt wonderful!!!

There is a 5K loop on base that makes for a great lunch time run. The base runs by horse fields, ponds, and base housing.  It makes for a great break from the rat race at work.

I took a quick jog this afternoon as I couldn't wait until later this evening.  Looking over my cubical wall I could see the bright sun as it beckoned me out the door.  The temps were a perfect 55 degrees.  What a great change from winter's cold weather.

I think I'll bring my workout clothes once again with me to work.  Perhaps I can sneak in another run tomorrow as well.

That sounds like a nice escape from work. I should try it sometimes. But I can't see over my cubicle walls. I have to get up and walk out of my cubicle to see a window, and then it's a window on which the blinds are always closed so that the sun doesn't ruin the printers that are right there.

I wasn't able to sneak out at lunch time but luckily my hubby got home early so I could go out before dinner.  Sadly, it made for a bit of a stinky dinner for the rest of the family.

That reminds me, every notice how you can go for some post long run food or coffee with your running buddies and not be bothered by everyone else's (or your own) stank?  I guess it is like eating garlic.  If you eat some also then you don't notice it on someone else.

One of my goals for the year was to become a better runner.  This equates to more consitency, actually working on speed, and having a goal for each run.  When I actually start improving on my speed I'll post it.  Right now I think I'd loose to a penguin. :)

That's an interesting observation about the post-run stink. I sometimes get home from a run and my husband complains about how I smell but I'm comfortable with myself.

From Nevels on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 11:01:18 from 131.204.15.93

are you suggesting that i smell less than fragrantly aromatic after a run?

with regard to speeding up, i've found that the best way to speed up in races isn't to add speedwork, but rather to add more base miles. maybe one day i'll be fast enough to be ready for speedwork...

I a good time at the Callaway Gardens half marathon this morning, despite the dreary weather. It was quite cold and gray, but at least it wasn't raining. The course was very pretty (quiet and peaceful which I much prefer) and I can only imagine how nice it would be on a sunny day. There were more hills than I expected, and I felt sorry for the full marathoners as I chugged uphill knowing that they were going to have to tackle those same hills again on their second loop around. It was a nice sized race, not crowded but always people in sight. They started on time and had adequate aid stations.
I was talking to a runner during the half and found out that Jeff Galloway's wife was running the marathon. She did a 30/30 ratio - 30 sec run/30 sec walk.  She finished in a better time than I ever have.

Due to unbelievably beautiful weather I decided to take a quick 3 mile trail run before returning to work from a doc appointment.

The trail is a bit wet from yesterdays rain and had the smell of musty wet leaves.  The birds were chattering up a storm and squirrels/chipmunks were fleeing from the path.  Honestly, I could have spent all morning and afternoon out there running that trail, jumping puddles, and stomping in mud.  There is just something about being on this trail that brings out my inner child.

I'm going to try and get back there next week.

Four of us took off this morning to do our long run on the hilly route.  We started off around 6 AM. The weather started out brisk, wet, and windy.  The rain seemed to blow in our face no matter what direction we ran or what turn we took.  Somewhere around 7:30 the rain stopped and the sky started clearing out.  We were blessed by the beautiful sun rising and turning the sky and clouds different shades of pink, purple, and orange.  Under clear skies we loop back around and headed back to the parking lot.

We finished up our mileage and had post run celebration at Dunkin Donuts.  MMMMMM, doooooughnut (said in a Homer Simpson voice).

Today we mixed it up with some street and some trail running.  Her 18 y/o daughter came along with us.  The daughter called it a run around mile 3.  My neighbor and I finished up running our neighborhood and finished up with 5.5 miles.

How's that coaching you're doing for your neighbor coming...?

From Little Engine That Could on Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 21:11:12 from 68.98.198.29

I can't say I'm coaching her rather I'm a consistent running partner with a plan. So far it is going well. She shows up, runs, holds a good conversation and doesn't complain. The best part of it is the fact I'm now training more consistently as a result. I think she is doing me the bigger favor.

I think the breast cancer marathon is one of the best organized most woman friendly marathon I’ve ever been to.  There are potties and water at every stop.  There is also more gu offered more often on the race course then you can imagine.  The post race amenities are fantastic.

I ran the half marathon as I’m a bit burned out on marathons at the moment.  My old running buddies from VA were t here and brought a new lady with them.  She was running her first race so we paired up together.  The poor thing had to listen to me rattle on all race. J

The race is mostly an out and back.  The half marathoner s spend  1.5-2 miles running on the beach.  I’m still undecided if I like that.  The breeze was nice and the view was beautiful.  Alas, it added nearly 30 seconds per half mile according my Garmin.

After the beach stretch the half marathoners turn around and head back on the streets.  The fan support is amazing.  Folks are lined up all over the streets cheering their hearts out.  It was odd but I really didn’t want the race to end.

There is a bridge overpass on the way back to the finish line.  By  this time several people are doing the death march.  I realized that doing a half marathon instead of the full left me with plenty of energy to pass folks and make it look easy.  Sort of the way Nevels looped me at the MIBM race last  summer. J

We finished the race and headed to the runners area for a beer.  As it was getting warm we decided to take a picture of us drinking a beer and text it out to our friends still running the marathon.  The caption read, “Ha  ha, you are still running”.  Isn’t it amazing what a beer will make you do?

It always takes me at least two miles to get warmed up. I'd have a hard time doing a speed workout with only a 1 mile warmup.

Don't know how long of rest between intervals...probably too long. I was too busy chatting with folks I only see once a month at best.

5:30 AM at 22 degrees.  Carolyn in CO how in the world do you do that?  It is cold and EARLY!!!

I told my neighbor that I'd run with  her....even if it did mean early mornings.  We did our hilly route for 4.25 miles.  It was a really good run even if it was chilly!

I don't know. It's tough every day. My husband gets up at 4:30 to get ready for work and leaves between 5:15 and 5:30, so it helps to have two alarms going off and lights being turned on.

The early is harder for me than the cold. The weather will warm up eventually, but early is always necessary for me.

I took my daughter to a 5K today.  It was one of those very well publicized races with just under 2000 people.  I had picked up our race packet the day before.  This was actually a really good thing as she dragged her feet in the morning and we got to the race start line just as the gun went off.

All was going good until 1/10 of a mile into it.  She realizes that the silly rubberband thingy  on her wrist was gone.  She begins to freak out on me.  She tells me she wants to go back to the start line and find it.  Well being mean mommy I let  her know that we are in a race and we do NOT go backwards for a silly rubberband thingy.  The next mile and a half goes like this: whine, cry, angry outburst, more whine, more whine, more whine.  Finally a water stop.  This gives me a 25 seconds of silence as she drank her water.

I took this opportunity to speed her up some as all that whine really killed our pace.  Funny enough, you can't gripe when you are panting and sucking wind.  Did I mention I'm mean mommy?

Somewhere after mile 2 she gets into race mode.  She buckles down and focuses on passing people.  This is our best mile of the race.  We come to the finish  line and there are several hundered people on each side of the road cheering.  My daughter breaks into a full sprint and finally crosses the finish line and runs straight to the goodies table for cookies, chips, and soda.  Wow, she really is a chip off the old block.

5:10 AM  - I receive text my running partner is bailing on me due to sick kid.  It’s below the freezing mark and going back to bed would be an acceptable option at the moment.  Since I’m already dressed up as the stay puff marshmallow man I decided to hit the road.

I turn to leave my house and encounter a possum.  Holy cow!  Have you ever noticed how really big those things are.  I’m aware that the possum was more scared of me than vice versa but only by a hair.  We are about 25 feet from one another and I decide to back away slowly.  He never moves and I book it the other way.

After that the rest of the run was uneventful.  I’m not even sure I even saw another person or car out.   The rain and clouds that I went to bed with were gone and only the huge beautiful moon and stars were showing.

Thought for the day:    "Running gives you freedom.  When you run, you can go at your own speed.  You can go where you want to go and think your own thoughts.  Nobody has any claim on you."   --Nina Kuscik, marathoner

I took PTO to have an extended lunch today.  There is a really nice trail about 20 min from work.  I met my old personal trainer there and we took off for another fun adventure in middle GA.  Sorry, no crazy animal stories to tell.  It was just a wonderfully nice, peaceful, rooty, rocky, hilly run.  Our pace was nothing to brag or even comment about but the break in the middle of the day was fantastic.

My car doubled as my locker room and I was quickly changed back into a worker bee and now I back in my cubical.  Yes, I do feel for those who have to venture into my cube after my post run afternoon hours. Nasty, I agree....but it has reduced my number of visitors today.  Productivity is up. :)

It was a brisk 3:45 AM when I rolled out of the garage and headed down to Albany, GA.  I wasn't planning on leaving this early but I couldn't get back to sleep and what the heck.  I arrived around 5.30 for the 7 start.  Luckily for me someone picked up my packet for me the night before and all I had to do is hang around for half hour before calling her hotel room and waking her up.

Starting line up....as I look around at the different participants I notice that I see more home town faces than I see at the local 5 and 10Ks.  I guess everyone wanted to come out for this one.

The temps are hanging in around the freezing mark and for some reason I thought wearing shorts would be a good idea.  See what happens when you don't get enough sleep?

The race starts and I've decided to go solo and try to go a little faster than my normal running buddy.  So we say our good byes and I go on.  The half marathoners take off to the left while the full marathoners go to the right for a 4 mile loop and then follow the half marathoners up the road.  Mile 3ish.  The lead marathoners pass me for the first time.  They look so good sprinting past me with such grace and minimal effort.  I so applaud them for their skill. Mile 4ish my iPod is dead.  I guess a 5+ year old iPod (that has been dropped into a bathtub) can only hold a charge for a short period of time.

This is the second time I've run this race.  Last year I did the full marathon.  They gave out these really great jackets to the marathoners.  This year's marathoners got a nice tech shirt but I think folks were disappointed they didn't get a jacket.

The course is flat.  There might be some gradual up hills but mostly it is flat until the end.  Then it is mostly down hill.  Can I just applaud the RD for that??  Bravo!  Somehow by accident my Garmin 405 got set to tell me how fast I was going for my interval.  (My intervals are set for every half mile).  As a result I was able to maintain a comfortably faster pace (faster for me) without ever feeling like I was going to kill myself.

Almost at mile 12....the lead marathoners pass me again.  OK, it is really bad to be passed by the marathoners the first time but it is humbling to be passed twice by the same people in the same race!!!  They still look good but there is a look of killer determination on their faces.  It was amazing to see.  Mile 12.5 Tommy (owner of Peach sports photo) track coach for our local running club was out snapping photos.  I'll have to post my big cheesy picture if I find it.

Mile 13, I'm sprinting in the last 1/10th of a mile.  Why it is nice to be a slower runner than your friends.....they cheer wildly for you by name as you run by.  Ever feel like a super star?  I sure did at the finish line today!!!

For the first time in over 3 years I finally finished a half marathon in under 2:30.  Heck I'll have to go back and check but I **think** I PRd by a few seconds at this race.  Sweet!

My 7 y/o daughter and I went to a 5K for a mom/daughter bonding time.  My son was suppose to come along as well but was unable due to a never ending cold.

The morning was brisk but we got there with plenty of time to sign up and  hang out.  My Saturday running friend Deb also came along as she was going to run with one of my kids while I ran with the other.  So we all ran together.  As we looked around at the small (200?) group of participants I was looking for any other girls under 10 and saw a sweet little girl we barely beat last weekend. This young lady was the only thing that got my daughter to stop whining and start running last race.

We let the main group of folks take off in front of us before we started our race.  I had her doing the Galloway mathod with a 30/30 second run/walk.  (Side note: Galloway's wife did 30/30 second ratio at the Calloway Gardens race marathon and finished faster than I ever had.) I digress.

As normal my daughter starts out with a bang.  Her small lean legs will carry her at a 7:45 min  mile pace (per my Garmin) for 30 seconds.  She then spends the next 30 seconds sucking wind while walking.  Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Mile 2.  Going full throttle has started wearing her down.  She has gone into whine mode. Time to go to plan A - find a target and tell her to pass it.  This normally works until the end of the race....not today

Mile 2.75ish.  She has decided that chasing down other participants isn't motivating.  She changes the target....my behind...no kidding.  Watch says run and I'm now sprinting to keep from being smacked on the rear from my daughter. (Motherhood is not glamorous).  Oddly enough, her last mile was her fastest.  She found the little girl from the previous weekend and passed her.  The little girl recognized my daughter and dropped the hammer as Madison passes her by.

Mile 3.  The tall, lean, little girl is now hammering down on Madi. Madi hears her feet closing in, looks over her shoulder, and goes full throttle. The girls have an even pace.  My daughter only 2 steps ahead of the other when they cross the line.

Post race: We find the other little girl and her family.  We congratulate the young girl on her great race.  That seems to help clear up her tears.  Shortly there after Madison and Caroline are hanging out, playing, and seemly best buddies.   Arrangements have been made to meet up this this young girl and her family once again on Tuesday at the track with our local running club.

Madison takes 3rd in age group.  12:18 min mile pace

Ramblings as I was running this evening.....

I think I like night running better than morning runs. I don't have to get up at 5AM for starters. Because it is not summer yet the evenings are a more comfortable temp to run in.  The frogs/toads are out singing as are some of the night birds.  The traffic driving by is lighter and no one is rushing to work, drinking coffee, nearly missing introducing a runner to the front bumper.

On the other hand, I've noticed there are a lot more dogs out in the evening than in the morning.  I would imagine the dogs are curled up in bed with better sense than I than to be out a 5 AM in the freezing cold.  Morning runs are also nice as the daily run is checked off the list before you start your morning.

Scott Jureck (article in this months runners world) seems to be having difficulties with his running career and other parts of life.  This is one person I really enjoy reading about.  I'm sorry this article has such bad news to share. I guess even super athletes have the same problems as the rest of us regular mortals.

 Can I complete a 100 miler before I turn 40?

For the sake of patriotism I'll spare you the really bad Ode to the American Flag I made up on tonights run. It was really awful.

How can I finish up this task at work in a quicker period of time?

I sooooo need to apologize to my kids this evening for acting possessed.  Thank goodness for this run.

I think I'd like to learn how to ride a motorcycle....or go skydiving.  How about doing a rim to rim run at the grand canyon.

As I finished up tonights run with 100+ more short odd topics that bounced around in my head.  I wonder if this is creative free flow or just Adult ADD.  I am just glad other folks talk to themselves when they run as well.

Our Tues night track workouts  are becoming more popular.  It has grown since we first started a few weeks ago.  The talent that shows up is so amazing.  I don't know if I'm more blown away at the 5 min mile pace a small 14 year old girl runs or the same pace run by a 60+ year old man.

Cool...

Congrats on taking the plunge toward the 100, and good luck with the training; it should be interesting. I have a friend (Kathy Youngren) that ran Mother Road in 2008, and I think she enjoyed herself. It sounds like a cool race, and it has a unique finisher's award. There's just something strangely rewarding about something as difficult as a 100...

Good luck with the new job, too. I'm coming closer to that point, as well, so I can sympathize with any apprehension going into it.

And Happy Running to you, too...

Also, the Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50 mile race is almost full.  The marathon is closed.  Sign up soon: http://www.theboogieraces.com/BOOGIEINFOPAGE.html . This is a fun race ... but it is also hot, humid, and hilly.  Last year someone requested to the RD that he let just one more person into the race so that he could practice for the Bad Water ultra.  Needless to say he was not refused.  I've been told I'm a little bit weird but those Bad Water folks are just plain nuts! ... and of course I'm a bit envious.  I don't see myself ever pushing those limits!  Nevels, I'll be your crew when you go out there.

Granite grinder half marathon + 1 extra mile.

This is a great race.  It's the 3rd time I've run it.  Apparently I keep forgetting how tough it is until after I hit the finish line.  This time I ran with my running partner's 19 y\o daughter.  We had a 2 hour drive and I was told that she like really old music like that from the 80's.  Sigh.  To my credit I didn't push her out the door after that comment.  Can I really be old??  Nah!

The first half of the race lulls you into a bit of an ego trip where you think, wow, it's not so tough.  I can do this!  I really am wonder woman.  Then you run over to the other side of the park and it is a totally different story.  Hills, rocks, granite slabs that you run up, creek crossings, mud eating shoes.  I tried to hold my little friend back some during the early miles but the second half still had a way of kicking our bum.  I tried to teach her that when things get bad/feel bad then try to "embrace the suck".  She of course thought I was nuts....not an original thought.

We cross the finish line and have a great finish line picture of us jumping for joy.

This race has a great post race party.  This year they went above and beyond.  Some mexican food joint was a sponsor and supplied the best chips, salsa, huge chicken burritos.  I'm all about food after a hard race and this totally hit the spot....as did the beer of course. :)

All of this fun was followed up with a 2 hour drive back listening to the "oldies" on the radio. ha!

You always seem to find tough courses to run on. You have quite a sense of adventure.

Great job on the race and coaching the "young one".

The 80s are Oldies? That's not what I thought in the 80s.

This week's schedule...

Monday: off - very nice

Tues: 4 miles

Wed: 8 miles

Thur: 6 miles

Friday: Off

Sat: 16 mile

Sun: 8 miles

Total weekly mileage: 42

I'm pretty confident I can hit those marks except for Wed.  I'm not sure I'll have any free time in one chunk to do all those miles.  Perhaps I can split it up into 4 in the AM and 4 in the PM

I have been reading about the pushup/situp/pullup blog challenge that fast running bloggers are trying and writing about.  What a challenge!  http://Samantha.fastrunningblog.com/blog--No-run-day-I-am-seeing-my-physio-early/04-07-2010.html

I think I'd die trying all 3 at the same time so I'll opt for the 200 sit-ups.  I'll let you know how it goes.

I finally got out the door around 8:30 this evening.  The run was really nice as I've not heard this one bird for several months now.  A whip-poor-will?  Anyways, it was just nice to hear it once again.  The toads are out all over the road.  As I was running something caught my eye and spooked me as it darted away.....a rabbit.  It startled the bee-gee-bees out of me.  I had to laugh as it reminded me of some old monty python movie where a killer white rabbit was taking out everyone.  Search for the holy grail perhaps?

I have 16 on schedule to day and 8 for tomorrow.  I had decided to leave my house early and run the 9.5 miles down to a 5K that my friend was the RD.  I'd run the race and then run back.  The goal was to knock both days out in one run.  Sadly, yesterday I was knocked out on my bum with something not quite so bad as the flu.  I woke up 3:15 AM feeling even worse.  I spent most of the day in bed.

4:30 AM - I will no longer make a negative comment about 5:30 AM being too early.  I have noticed that I run slower in the morning than in the evening.

It is odd how I can run in my neighborhood post 10 PM in my neighborhood and feel safe yet first thing in the morning I'm paranoid like crazy.  I read somewhere that assults happen just as frequently in the early morning runs as the late night runs.  It must be the lack of coffee.  My brain must be making up reasons for me to be back home with a cup of java in hand.

8 miles were on schedule today but only 7 miles were accomplished.

I think totally differently. I have a jaunt near my house that I like to run. I affectionately call it the "rapist loop" because I live in the country and it is in the middle of nowhere. It is very secluded with no houses/lights/people/etc. It is a perfect place for people to park their cars and venture off into the thick woods, etc. Although I haven't ran it early in the morning, I would feel much more comfortable doing so because I think all the rapists and bad people are in bed passed out by 5AM. At 9-10PM (when I have ran it and was a nervous wreck!) they are out looking for prey.

Way to get going at 4:30AM. That shows your determination. I would cry big crocodile tears if I had to get out the door that early. Nice run!

One of my Saturday morning running partners came over to join me on my 6 miler today.  We decided to do a couple of miles off road on a trail by my house.

I wish all runs felt as great as they did today.  The weather is amazing, the neighborhood is still blooming with flowers and looks beautiful (which you can't see at 5:30AM), and the company was outstanding.  The pace seemed comfortable and easy.  Now I remember why I do this!

This was an odd run.  No one from my normal Saturday group showed up.  Weird.  I must have missed the memo.  So I did 19 miles on my own.  I had 16 on the sched for today and 8 for tomorrow.  My original thought was just to do all the mileage and take tomorrow off.  I just got tired (and hot) after 19 and called it a day.

I think I'm converting to a morning runner. I've got a marathon this weekend that my body is very much unprepared for. The race is called the twisted ankle marathon. I've got my miles up to 19 which would surfice for a marathon - if only barely.

Today however, I felt compelled to keep moving forward with my training that seems to have slacked.  Dang.  I was shooting for 22 miles but called it a day just after 20.  I ran out of drink and it was 88 degrees.  I'm going to shoot for 25 this weekend.

The temperature is much hotter at night. But, the humidity seems 100 times worse then too. Morning runs are where it is at if you can pry yourself out of bed. I, personally, don't have the strength to do that 99.99% of the time.

i always face the conundrum: do i want to run slow because i'm not awake yet (AM running), or do i want to run slow because the heat sucks the energy right out of me (PM running)...

my answer is usually to go run slow.

On a more personal note, I had to use the bathroom so badly that I actually went into a Porto potty on a construction site.  I'm not sure but I think that nasty experience (and smell) shorten my life span by 6 weeks.  Yuck!

Evening run - not quite dark.  Podrunner's Native Sun mix playing.  Humid as heck.

I just had one very interesting running partner this evening.  My neighborhood is on the outskirts of town so we have lots of forest land just outside my neighborhood.  This brings a lot of wildlife out onto our streets early in the morning and at dark.  I see the normal animals when I run: dogs, cats, occasionally I see possum, raccoon, or an armadillo.  Tonight for nearly a mile I was accompanied by a bat.  Seriously a bat!  It was flying up and down the street above my head. Often it would dive down right in front of me into a pack of bugs just before I went through them.  I can't say I've had a running partner do that for me before!  It must be the fluff of it's fur as it looked like a rolly polly furry thing with thin and delicate wings that didn't seem like they should have been able to support it.  This was such an amazing run!

Bethel Hill Moonlight Boogie 50 miler

Anyway, the short version of the this weekend….

Race started a little bit late.  It was still 96 degrees and humid.  It seemed a little bit less humid or I’m a bit more acclimated.  My aunt who lives about 90 miles away came down to see me off.  She hung around for a couple of hours to see me complete my first loop, left for the hotel, and then was back to see me finish.  I love that lady.

The first lap went fine. It was hot and I was sweating like a pig before I hit mile 0.5.  I know it will surprise you but I started talking to everyone around me.  I can’t say anything spectacular happened during the first 10 mile loop.  I took off on my second loop before sunset.  I was toying with the idea of taking my head lamp with me but choose not to.  It was dark (very dark) before I finished that 6 mile portion and passed by my car once again.  So now that it was pitch black I worked on catching a group in front of me with lights and stuck with them for a while.  Within 10 minutes of running with this group the folks with the headlamps spotted 2 copperheads crossing the road…they were both just 10-20 feet in front of us when we found them.  I had enjoyed running w/o my head lamp but that was enough justification to pick it up for the next loop.

I picked up the head lamp and finished loop #2 – 20 miles.  Someone in the group was starting to have some trouble and I decided to hang back and help encourage him.  Although this sounds like a nice thing it was mostly because the other folks in the group were only doing the marathon and it was dark/scary out there alone.  I’ve got no issue with slowing down for a piece of mind.  This wasn’t the best idea.  The guy was seriously undertrained and ended up walking 30/50 miles.  Sadly being a big chicken that meant I ended up doing the same.  It took forever to finish.

All of that said I got what I came for.  I wanted to run through the night and see a sunrise and I did.  I wanted to be totally exhausted and have the will/determination to keep pushing through and I did.  It was exactly what I expected.

Also, the volunteers are so amazing.  They would fill up your water bottle, get you food, and give encouragement.

I had the fun of watching folks vomit and then later stepping in someone else’s vomit on the course.  I know you are all jealous.  :b

Great job completely that ultra. Interestingly enough, I watched a couple of videos about that race (from last year) on youtube. Looks interesting.

awesome job!! i would've stuck with the slow guy too. i would've been complaining about it in my head, but in the end, i'm pretty scared of the dark and snakes and would've rather gone slow with someone else than die by myself.

how is your 100 training going? which one are you doing? mother road? an awesome ultra runner from huntsville is doing it this year too.

Cool.

Congrats on the all-night adventure; it sounds like you had a good time (in that all-too familiar, weird, ultrarunner sort of way...)

Now you've seen what inevitably turns into the roughest part of a 100, so you kind of know how to handle it. Keep up the training, and you'll be ready...

thanks folks. It was a tough night.

Nevels, never in your race reports do I read, "It really sucked several times during the race." As much fun as I had I was amazed at how amazingly high and low you could feel during a single race.

I sent my co-worker a link to this race report and he sent me a link to a psychologist in the area. ha!

It is fascinating how different you can feel from one moment to another, especially at night...

but yes, you have moments when it REALLY SUCKS for a while, then you swing back up, repeating the process several times. fun stuff, right...?

Today was the first day back in my running shoes and it felt GREAT!  I was having some problems with a toe nail that developed a blister under the nail during the boogie race.  Mental note, cut toe nails before a long run.  I guess I just have to learn the hard way. Today was actually the first day I have been able to wear shoes other than sandals.

I ran my normal neighborhood route.  Older couples (which is to say folks my age) were walking their dogs, local teenagers were walking in packs on the road, smaller kids were playing in their front yards.  It was a very Norman Rockwell type experience.

The temps are still in  the 90s.  I'm going to have to switch back to running in the mornings once again.

On a different note, Doug Dawkins, the RD of the boogie marathon ran across the US last year.  I learned that fact from another participants.  I've been reading the blog of his adventures and thought I'd share the link. http://dougsrun.wordpress.com/

I'm noticing, as odd as this sounds, that I find myself looking forward to breaking a good sweat now when I run.  It just seems to be an instant pat on the back for going out and putting forth a good effort.  After a mile or two I'm drenched and feeling like a million bucks.

The downside to all this heat/sweat is the fact my garmin reads 15-30 sec slower per mile.

Actually, as I'm typing this my hubby is commenting on the smell of my endevors and is wondering why I'm on the computer rather than in the shower.   He just looks at me odd when I tell him it is the smell of success. :0)

I’ve put off entering my mileage this week as it may have contained un-family friendly content.  Saturday I went out for an easy 10 miler.  I didn’t run with my normal group as they we weren’t meeting this week.  I didn’t eat breakfast because I was running late and the temps were already climbing.  I didn’t sleep much because I went to bed late.  I had an awful run.  I think that I sucked more that day then in the history of sucking. My heart rate was through the roof even when moving at a shuffle.  I was struggling before I even hit mile 3.  I turned around and found my car.  Including the walk of defeat back to my car I was approx 5 miles for the day.

Fast forward a few days and looking at things in retrospect I only set myself up for a failure.  My body is still a bit weak from my last race and I haven’t been taking care of some of the most basic needs (food/sleep).  Keeping that in mind I went out Monday with no expectations except to put in some street time.  Pace and duration of the run were dependent on how I was feeling.   Two and half miles later I threw in the towel.  I wasn’t too happy with the mileage but in 92 degree temps I was glad to be done.

Tonight there was blessed rain.  I ran through the night faster than I had been all week feeling renewed, invigorated,  and all around glad to be running.  I managed to squeak in 4.57 miles.  I came home feeling like a champion finally back on the path of training.

Speaking of training, I read an article that stated that you need to be as committed to the training plan as you are to the race on race day.  My training log shows my commitment has been lacking for quite some time.  My consistency has been in the toilet.  It is so easy to miss a run for life’s other priorities. Kids are an easy excuse not to run but it is easy to schedule runs around them (early AM or late PM).  Hubby feeling neglected is my normal excuse but it really only takes 10 min of quality time to resolve that.  I just need to recommit myself to the goals I have set for myself.  They are not un-obtainable but they do have to be scheduled and followed…at least 80% of the time.

I love finishing races.  Albeit in the back of the pack I will still cross the finish line.  I just like slapping on that bib, watching the miles melt by, pushing when it gets hard, and then feeling the pride of success when it is all over.  I need to find a way to bring that excitement to my daily runs as well.  Not every run needs to be exciting but it would be nice if most runs didn’t feel like a chore someday.

Having our group runs on Saturdays helps alleviate some of that. I’ve not run with them in nearly a month due to conflicts with schedules.  I wonder if my Saturday morning running partners know how much they help keep me motivated.  I hope that I am helping to keep them motivated as well.

I’m looking forward to Saturday’s run with great anticipation.  We are going 10-12 miles on our easy route.  I’m hoping that I don’t lag behind due to tired legs but I won’t mentally be-rate myself if I do.  At least I feel confident that I will make my distance goal with my running partners friendship and support. As the Beatles song  goes, “I get by with a little help from my friends”.

GREAT SONG!

my training isn't consistent either. it is something i struggle with, for sure. i, just like you, do sooooo much better when i run with my friends. sometimes i drag them along, but most of the time they drag me along. i think we're going to start training seriously for a half in about a month (that is the plan anyways). the race will be in october. then, in december, we're going to memphis where most of them will run the 1/2 but my one buddy is trying to talk me into doing the full. we shall see.

good luck on your long run tomorrow. i hope to log a few extra miles as well...

Our run started out at 6 AM with amazing temps of 68 degrees and only moderate humidity.  I still wonder how I can’t stand to get up before 6:30AM any other day but on Saturdays I look forward to waking up @ 5:20 for a 6 AM run.

We did an easy pace for just over 9 miles.  Our group leader decided he wanted to take the flat route rather than a more challenging one.  I’ve been feeling very weak on my past runs over the last 2 weeks so this was great news for me.  Our pace was about 25 seconds per mile slower than our normal group pace.  I’m not sure if they were just being nice to me or perhaps I wasn’t the only one having a difficult time.

I was really excited to have completed the 9.25 miles as this has been the longest I’ve run in over 3 weeks.  I’m not sure I could have done this on my own as my confidence in running has gone down the toilet.  This was really a boost for me.

I had originally planned on running this morning but opted to have some tv time with hubby the night before.  Netflix is the death of my morning runs…it keeps me up later at night.  So instead I slept in and opted to hit the road at 9 PM.

I started the run listening to an audio book I downloaded from the library.  About a half a mile into the run I noticed I was going slowly and the output effort was great.  I was actually a bit ticked as I know that I have more in me than what I’ve been running.  (I hate negative inner monologs).  I changed from a book to my running music (mostly 80s stuff).  Amazingly the run took a complete 180.  My pace picked up, my thoughts were more encouraging, and my run was much more fun than before.

I didn’t bring any water with me on my run so I took the shorter route and finished at 4.25 miles for the night.

I still need to work on consistency.  My goal for this week is have no more than 1 day off between runs so that I can at least have 4 days a week of training.

It sounds like the book was distracting rather than motivating. The 80s music will keep you moving, eh.

I think the book (minority report) wasn't doing much for my run at all. That said, when I listened to the book Seabiscuit I think I broke any 5K adn 10K PRs I had on each training run. That is a great book! There is something about listening to detailed account of 2 horses duking it out that really gets the feet pumping.

I think there will soon be a new medical condition defined.  I’ve heard of tennis elbow and runner’s knee.  Today I’m experiencing classic symptoms of wii arm.  This occurs when you play the wii sports and wii dance against your kids for a couple of days straight.  You get the wii arm.  Symptoms include sore arm, tired shoulders, and inability to lift arm.  I’m guessing a little rest and the symptoms will go away.

Tonight marks the 1 week mark of consistency.  I’ve not taken more than one day off.  In this case that means I’ve run only 3 days last week but will run 4 this week.  I’d like to reach 5 days a week consistently for 4 weeks.  (Actually for much longer but I’ll set the goal for 4 weeks).

I had a hard time starting off tonight.  Apparently someone poured concrete into my legs and took me nearly a half mile to shake that off.  The run was mostly non-eventful.  I had the chorus of dogs keep me company throughout the different parts of the neighborhood.  I’m noticing that some of the night noises I used to hear 3 years ago when we moved in are now gone.  Mostly I miss hearing the whippoorwills in the evening.

I actually took my shirt off after mile 2 and just ran in my sports top.  I normally don’t do that as folks down here in GA are conservative and find that weird.  I just couldn’t cool off tonight.  The humidity was higher than normal and it felt like I was trying to push a wall down the road as I ran.  I checked the weather after I showered (around 10:30 PM) and saw that the temps were still 95 at that late time.  Wow! No wonder it was such a hard run.

wii arm - classic!

if i run trails alone (about once a week or so), i'll run in my sports bra. it is just so much cooler. otherwise, i suck it up and try not to make the people around me throw up. the girls i run with don't run in just their bras, but we seem to always pass lots of super skinny girls that do. i am not super skinny. that is why i only do it when i'm alone.

95 at 10:30 is pretty frigid.

To say I didn’t want to go out tonight would be an understatement.  My body was itching to go but my brain wanted no part of going out.  Since I needed to get out today to meet my consistency goal for the week I decided to take the dog with me on my run.  Panda is a good enough dog.  She is still under a year and needs to mature a bit.  She isn’t the best running partner.  That is my fault and not hers as I’ve not taken the time to leash train her to heal.  So on our (very short) run she’d cross infront of me and I’d trip over her. She’d suddenly put on the breaks when she sees a millipede on the road.  It was just small things like this that made for a frustrating adventure.  I’m claiming only 1 measly mile.

I got home and pondered this burn out that is creeping upon me.  A few things crossed my mind.  First, I doubt I’ll make it the 100 miler that I signed up for.  My mileage is in the crapper and I’d have to be very committed in order to reach that goal.

I’m both glad/sad coming to that realization.  When I signed up for the race I searched for a training plan that would fit into my schedule.  What I didn’t realize is how much of life I would have to give up in order to meet that schedule without it affecting the normal routine of the family.  To fit in my family’s routine, my training runs would have to be between 4-6 AM or post 9 PM.  This was working for awhile…a very short while.  I went to bed earlier and cut back an hour or so every night on sleep.  I was really surprised to find out that hubby didn’t like this new routine.  He actually likes having me sit next to him in the evening and watching old Law & Order episodes with him.  For him, that was quality time and my early to bed was cutting that out.  I think in his eyes my training had taken priority over him.

I think I’m going to have to give up my 100 mile goal until my kids are a bit more self sufficient.  I’m a bit bummed about that.  So as a new goal I’ll find a 50 miler and sign up for that.  Those are doable and take up less training time.  I need to do one redeem myself for my awful finishing time at the Boogie Races.

I think what I’m feeling now is a bit burned out, let down, and disappointed with myself.  Yesterday my Trail Runner Magazine arrived.  Would you believe that there is an article on “How to stay motivated for Training and Racing”.  Ever notice how sometimes things show up exactly when you need them most?

I got to the race around 2PM to start setting up.  I was amazed to find that Andrew, his wife, and 2 other volunteers had already set up the huge finish line, set up the packet pickup table, and were in the process of setting up the aid station.  Andrew had already marked the course and we were good to go.

Folks started trickling in to pick up their race packets.  Along with the regular race goodies (bib, other race flyers, power bars, coupons for stuff) we also gave everyone a flashlight and an aluminum water bottle.  For fun we also threw in a tiara pin, pumpkin necklace, and a pumpkin lollipop with a glow stick as the lollipop stick.  If nothing else, we had a great time shopping for stuff for our race goodies.

A few folks took off at the 3PM start.  Some folks wanted to be finished long before midnight and others wanted the extra cushion.  It was 95 degrees around 2PM but after a brief shower the temps dropped to 88 degrees.  We all had a fear that the small shower would turn the race into a sauna but fortunately it didn’t.

We tried to ensure every participant got VIP treatment. This went double for the out of town folks. We had a family (all 3 were participants) drive in from Minnesota the night before.  I am amazed that folks would put themselves in a car for 2 days (one way) for our race.  I was determined to ensure that they had extra special VIP treatment due to their marathon effort just to get to the starting line.

I had previously arranged to run with a fellow MM, Melody, so at 5:15pm we took off.  We wanted to add a buffer for hills, heat, and humidity. The course starts off by looping around the club house to the beach area on the lake.  The lake is calm and serene. The view is beautiful.  Then the road takes a turn for the first of many up hills that were to be faced on the looped course.

I didn’t know that the woman I arranged to run with was actually a speed walker.  My (slow) run was faster than her walk so I joined her in speed walking so we could maintain our conversation.  There is no PRs setting at MIBM so what the heck.  I can walk fast during a race but this woman could move.  I think she slowed it down a touch just so I could keep walking pace with her.  I believe our pace was 14:20 min mile pace up the hills and 13:45 down the hills.  For someone not versed in speed walking this was a challenge.

The race twisted and turned through the neighborhood of Lake Wildwood.  There were small hills, killer hills, slight elevations, and an occasional 10 foot stretch of flat road. There are no mile markers so you have to judge your mileage by either Garmin (wasn’t wearing mine) or by the aid stations.

The two manned aid stations had water, poweraid, PB&J, pretzels, power bars, homemade muffins, bananas, cold wet sponges, and so much more.  The volunteers there were exceptional at encouragement and getting you out as quickly as possible.  There were also 2 other unmanned aid stations with water, power aid, and buckets with cold wet sponges.  I believe the longest mileage between aid stations was approx 1.8 miles.  We were hoping to prevent folks from dehydrating on their race.

I made it to the manned aid station at the midway point.  I was ever so thankful to see the cheerful volunteers and a bit overwhelmed that we had only traversed 3.7ish miles.  The weather is hovering around 88 degrees but it seemed so much hotter than that.  A few more hills later we hit the second unmanned station climbed a few more hills and headed toward the completion of our first lap.

Somewhere on that first loop I started listening to what my body was telling me.  If my body could actually form words it probably would have been name calling.  I had been so focused on getting participants checked in, sent off, answering questions, making small talk with the runners and volunteers earlier in the day that I had forgotten to eat.  I had lunch around 11:30 AM and somewhere on the loop around 6PM my body told me with no uncertainty that it was NOT happy.

We finally make it to the main aid station and I tell my partner to go on.  I stuffed my face with PBJ, poweraid, and some cookies.  The volunteers told me that they were overwhelmed with checking runners in, tracking runners as they looped, and maintaining the aid station.  (There were only 3 of them).  Glow sticks still needed to go out on the course to light up the signs and they were unable to break away to do this.  I think a good RD would have called it quits right then and would have gone into volunteer status but I went out for one more loop so I could at least finish up a half marathon.  I feel a bit bad about that.

So I took off with my iPod for company to complete my last loop.  I caught up to my running partner and another woman walking.  The other lady was also a MM and was really struggling. She was a bit upset that there was no Gu at the aid station when we stated there would be some there.  (Inner monolog: Dang, she’s right.  We totally messed up on that one).  Melody gave her a Gu to the woman and I offered her my fanny pack full of gels.  She took the Gu and rejected my fanny pack as she didn’t want the extra weight.  We parted ways with the struggling woman.  I stayed with Melody as her company was much better than my iPod.  I shared how awful I felt about not having Gu at the aid stations and she pointed out that there was so much food at those stations that I shouldn’t let it bother me.  Good point.  I stopped worrying about it…..but there will be some GU on the tables next year.

Somewhere along this second loop the heavens opened up and the rain poured down in bucketfuls. My first thought, dang, there goes all of our chalk markings.  We have signs up where to turn but we also put chalk on the road to help encourage runners that they were still on the course on those long stretches.

We continued on in the rain feeling rejuvenated.  The rain washed off the early miles of sweat and discomfort and offer hope of even cooler temps.  It also offered blisters but that is a small occupational hazard.  I kept my phone with me during the race to alert home base if water was needed at the unmanned aid stations, found a down runner, or if someone was lost trying to find Lake Wildwood.  Sadly, this rain also marked the end of my phone.  Phone + rain = dead, short circuit,  broken phone.

Even with the rain, the second loop seemed more difficult than the first loop.  I was never so glad to reach the finish line and collect my medal.  Also worth noting, each participant received a generic running medal where on the back of that medal was an inscription of the race and the participant’s name.  That nice touch was Andrew’s idea.  Folks really seemed to like that.

I changed into dry clothes and morphed into a volunteer.  We assisted folks with food, encouraged runners when they came by, and provided assistance when it was needed.  Several folks I noticed changed their mind along the course route and also downgraded to the half marathon.  Several of these were even the MM that came from out of town for the race.  I guess the race was a bit more to swallow for others as well as for me.

A half marathoner from Savannah was about to start her race.  I noticed that she had the glow necklaces around her neck for safety but she didn’t have a light or any other reflective gear. Since I wasn’t going out at night I offered her my head lamp.  She reluctantly took the light but declined the reflective belt.   We try to stress how dark this neighborhood is at night.  On this 6.55 mile loop there are maybe 10 street lights.  When she finished she shared that was glad to have had the light.  (Yet another good reason to have quit running at the half mark)

I had obsessed for nearly a month about having enough safety measures on the course to help keep runners safe.  The Middle Georgia Emergency Medical Services were kind enough to donate an ambulance and 3 medics to our race.  Thank goodness!  The lady who was struggling ended up collapsing and needing attention.  One other runner needed to be pick up on the course by the ambulance as well due to severe cramping.  Both runners are doing fine but DNF.

Several local Macon Tracks trickled in to start their half marathon race or come to help volunteer.  I really can’t say enough for the folks in our running club.  One person became the race photographer and took pictures as folks finished and received their tiara and medal.  More people assisted with the aid station and met the needs of runners.  Most importantly, they hung around after the race and helped us break down the aid station and clean up.

Overall the race went much better than expected.  Andrew and I can’t take very much credit for this.  Rather the credit goes to the 5 core volunteers that arrived at 1PM, help set up the race, worked the race, and broke down the race.  They called it a day around 1:30 AM for a 12+ hour day.  We had several volunteers do amazing work but these main 5 folks organized those folks to where they could best serve.  I do some volunteering in races during the year to help out and give back.  I will make it a point to try and do that at least once a month (two months at a minimum) to give back just a portion of what was given so freely to me.

Hot!  If ever I felt like I was training for bad water it would have been today.  More hills, heat, and humidity.  We came to a point in our normal training run where we had to make a decision, turn left, be exposed to the direct sunlight and take the shorter (and flat) route back to cars or turn around and run (numerous) hills in the shade back to the cars.

the hills won.

5:15 AM.  Still very humid this morning. I started off slow mostly because I was still half asleep.  I made an effort to speed up each half mile.  I was mostly successful.  It was really nice to get this out of the way so I can now enjoy the rest of the day.

Does enjoying the rest of the day mean taking a nap? Because that's what inevitably happens to me every time I get up that early to go running.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 17:54:54 from 198.241.174.15

I always start out slowly.

I think we have a bigger differential between high and low temperatures here in Colorado than you do because our humidity is lower. Humidity tends to hold in the heat over night.

You know, I DID try and take a nap today. :) Sadly, phone kept ringing, dog kept barking, and sick kid kept needing help. (She's feeling better now).

I'll just have to call it an early night

I went to bed last night knowing I had to meet someone @ 5AM for a run. I was so worried that I’d oversleep that I woke up every 30-45 min. I woke up wide awake around 4AM after having a dream that I was getting ready for work. I looked down at my watch and saw the time read 7:30 and I slept through our run. I really need to get a life.

The temp was nice this morning 77 degrees but the humidity was still oppressing 99%. I asked a friend for help doing more hilly runs. Well, I got what I asked for. Not only did we do nothing but hills, we did it faster than I would have pushed myself had I’d been running solo….on a flat road. I’m feeling a bit tired this morning but still I’m glad to have this run completed.

I’m looking forward to sleeping in (6:30AM) tomorrow morning.

It really helps me get up and out the door if I'm meeting someone. It's great that your friend was able to push you a little.

So to escape the humidity I decided to run in the evening.  I see the choices are basically run in the morning when the temps are high 70s and nearly 100% humidity or run at night where the temps are 99 and humidity is 62%.  Honestly, they both make for a challenging run.

I had got up early this morn and had a busy day at work.  I finally made it out of the house around 9PM.  I had decided earlier in the day that I wanted to do 6 miles today.  I was soooooooo tired just before I went out for a run.  So to remedy that I downed a red bull and left.  It was still sooooo hot.  I had to sit down after 3.6 miles to cool off.

I ran into our neighborhood watch while I was out.  It was very comforting to see we actually have one and we do more than just post signs.

I made it back home and sat under the ceiling fan until my internal thermostat finally felt normal. I finally hit the sack around 11PM and slept like a baby.

6AM, 82 degrees, 97% humidity.  No breeze.  I think what make today fun was the amount of griping (done very humorously) about the heat and our lack of sanity of being out there.

I might have mentioned this before but we are crewed every Saturday by a wife of one of our Saturday runners.  Today this lady was a true God send.  Just about the time we were all going to pass out from heat exhaustion we'd turn the corner and **poof** there was Joanne with ice cold gatoraid in cups handing them out to us.  I love that woman.  Her hubby (our group organizer) had a rough time today and called it quits at mile 8.6.  It was his 68th b-day so we didn't give him grief....this time.  Luckily some time in the AC car help perk him up.

Quick report (starts the day before):

7PM: Hubby takes me out for a mexican dinner and I have a margarita.  I don't drink but it really tasted good.  So I have one more.  (Stupid idea!!!)

3 AM: I wake up with a splitting head ache.  I don't ever remember feeling this awful in college when we use to drink as our hobby.  I take an Ibuprofen and watch the digital clock slowly increase in time.

4:37 AM: I wake up look at the clock and realize I've slept through my watch alarm. (Set for 4:25).  I drag my sorry butt out of bed. I'm already dressed because I slept in my running clothes.  Yes that is weird but it saves me about 10 min in the morning.  The car was already packed so I'm out of the house by 4:45.

5:30 AM: I pull into Andrew's house.  Transfer my junk from my  car to his truck and we are off to the race.  I still feel like crap.  I eat some Scott's loaded granola bars (really good stuff) for breakfast.

7:30 AM: We get to the race.  Drag our stuff (chairs, food, drink bottles, ...) up to the race starting line, get our numbers, eat some food, wait for start.  I feel like I want a nap....and still feel like crap

7:55 AM:  RD gives her race instructions.  It starts off like this.  "Do not die during this race  and also do not pet the rattle snakes".  Then she gives the standard directions, info on the course, don't litter, yadda, yadda.

8 AM: Race starts.  Everyone takes off.  We go less than 0.1 miles into it when there is a bottle neck.  There is a very large log crossing the path.  (there is another one about .5 away).  The log wasn't hard to jump on and then over but it got very tiresome after the 17th or 18th time.

The race course itself was a 1.18 mile loop.  The surface changed from single track, to paved road, to dirt road, to shale road, sand, wooden foot bridge, then to a massive 1/3 mile huge hill....that we had to summit again and again and again.  Thanks to all of the scenery changes the loop never got dull or monotonous.

Unlike other years, we were very fortunate that the race started with overcast skies.  The temps were only low 80's and standard 100% humidity.  The clouds kept the temp low and humidity high for about 2 hours.

Loop 1:  Sucks.  I'm wondering why the heck I'm out there instead of sleeping in my bed. I take off my shirt after the first mile and decide to run in just my sports top.

The first two hours were spent with me struggling to get up that blasted hill and feeling like crap.  Then suddenly the third hour hit.  The sun comes out, temps go up and the humidity starts to drop.  Better yet, I'm starting to feel good.  I pick up my pace and notice that everyone else has dropped theirs.  So now most everyone is going about the same pace give or take.

The fifth hour 1 PM.  It is hot.  Stank hot.  Need I say more?

I finish up lap 23 and see Andrew sitting on the sidelines.  He is bummed that the counters missed one of his laps.  I talk him into walking one more lap just for the heck of it.  We finish our loop and head to the food table. We still have time left in the race and we both contemplate doing one more lap.  The cheese burgers smelled really good and our stomachs won over the pride of one more mile.  The volunteers heckled us suggesting we take the hamburger on the trail with us.  I'm thinking that is a good idea but Andrew declines.  OK, I could use some company so we sat down and turned in our chip.  Someone brings us a beer (sweet) and suggests we make a beer loop.  Well, now that sounds like fun.  I think we would have done that except we had just turned in our chip.

Sometime after 4PM: we pack up our stuff, change clothes, and start on our way back to middle GA.

Somewhere during the 8 hrs some guy dropped and needed an ambulence.  Apparently he forgot the "do not die" rule of the course.  He did get released from the hospital before the end of the race. (no, he didn't try and add more loops). The RD and volunteers pushed the ice after that happened.  They started handing out small zip lock bags full of ice and sent everyone out with that.  We are going to be doing that next year at Make it by midnight marathon.  It really is a good way to keep runners cooled off.

I'm going to have to talk to the RD about a few things.  They did chip timing for the loops.  I wonder how much that cost and if we could pull it off in our race.  They also gave out a kick butt canvas tote bag.  I loved it.  I need to find out where she got that.  Mostly, I'd like to find out how she had enough $$ for all of this.  They only had 50 folks at $40 a head.  She had to have taken a loss unless she had a sponsor.  They had such a great race that I'd like to duplicate it as much as reasonably possible in our home grown race.

I got home, morphed into mom mode, and passed out cold from exhaustion around 9:15PM last night.  I feel much better today.   I suffer from 2 blisters on my feet from not changing my socks sooner than mile 17.

I cannot believe how nice the weather was this morning.  My Tuesday morn running partner and I tackled hills with ease…which is to say we were not wishing a car would run over us just so we could be done with the hill early.  I couldn’t believe that Mother Nature would be so cooperative this morning.   I made mention of the nice temps sometime during the race.  Pruette, who checks temp/humidity before each run, informs me that if feels nice because we are only at 90% humidity instead of the normal 100%.  Wow what a difference a drop in 10% made.

Also worth mentioning is the fact we were going slower than normal because my legs aren’t fully recovered from last weekend.  That too helped to make for a good run.

5:15AM, 74 degrees, 90% humidity – 100% enjoyable

I've been out of running for about 10 days due to the illness and then death of my mom in law.  She passed on Sunday as a result of colon cancer that was uncaught.  She was probably in some sort of pain in the last few months or at least weeks of her life.  Sadly she had Alzheimer's and was unable to tell us.  I've read that a colonoscopy is relatively painless despite the fact something is probing in places the sun don't shine.  I've also read that this cancer is easy to treat/remove if caught early enough and survival rate is extraordinary.  Writer Dave Barry had an article on his colonoscopy that was actually so funny I had tears running down my face.  As part of my public service announcement for colonoscopy I give you this link to Dave's article.  http://www.miamiherald.com/2009/02/11/427603/dave-barry-a-journey-into-my-colon.html

So in a nutshell, read Dave's article.  If you are reading this at work do be warned that you will laugh out loud...not a chuckle but a down right belly laugh.  Then talk to your doc and see if you have reached the age of needing a colonoscopy. I believe that age is 50 unless you have a family history then the suggested age is 40 or 45.

As for my run today...it stunk.  Well, perhaps it was me that stunk it up today.  Temps were the normal GA summer heat and humidity. 6AM, 80 degrees and climbing, 100% humidity.  Per my request to our group we are doing more hilly routes.  They went 12 miles.  I broke down sobbing and called it a day around mile 4.5.  It seems that running still brings out all sorts of raw emotions that just won't stay stuffed down.

My hubby offered me a drink and I had to make a tough decision this evening……Beer or run?? I only drink on occasions and only on the weekend.

My 5 mile run was cut down to 2.75 miles.  Have you ever had a gut feeling about not running in a certain area?  I had planned on running my neighborhood and then down the street through another one.  About mile 0.5 I had a near panic feeling about running down the road to the other neighborhood.

I decided to not to do run to the other neighborhood.  Then my imagination had the best of me. I can’t even put into words how badly I scared myself.  I tried to remember all those safety suggestions you read in articles and hear in lectures.  I ran trying to look as puffed as possible…I was running as tall as possible, running like a linebacker about to tackel someone like you see on football games, and I put on my “mean mommy” face.

I wish I could have had a picture taken so I can show how ridiculous I really looked.  Of course nothing bad happen.  I didn’t even see any strange people in the neighborhood.  The only folks that were out were just the normal few folks that take their dog out for a walk at 9:45 PM.  I think this was a case of my mind/body not wanting to be out for a run and it did what it could to cut the run short.

Honestly, I think my body just wanted to come back and get that can of cheap beer.

5:15 AM, 70 degrees, 100% humidity.  Wow! What a great run!  The 70 degrees was such a nice change from the normal temps.

I met Pruette, the 68 y/o man I run with on Sat for hills today.  We run a hilly route each Tues morn @ 5:15.  Today I started giving names to the big hills as we were running up.  There was “breath taker”, “big betty”, and “easy hill”.  Breath taker was pretty obvious as the hill was causing us to suck wind.  Easy hill really isn’t but it was the last big one and so we gave it a name to make it seem easy.  That really didn’t work.

A couple of things worth noting.  First, I run with such an old man as he is the only person I can keep up with.  Second, I really shouldn’t be running when I’m that tired.  I start doing odd things like naming hills. J

I love the fun things that come to mind when I'm running tired. They're usually a little amusing and take my mind off the fact that I'm running outside in the dark while everyone else is asleep.

Naming hills is good. I've done it, and I know others who do it too. I like how you named the last one easy in order to convince yourself that it was. very clever!

... are you sure "Pruette" actually exists...?

What a great night!!  The temps were low 80's and so was the humidity.  Can it be that we are getting a brief break from summer?  Could this be the start of fall weather??

I ran to a Pod Runner I've never used before.  It was a step mix.  The music break down was like this: 10 min - 150 BPM,  10 min - 160 BPM, 10 min - 170 BPM, 10 min - 160 BPM, 10 min - 150 BPM, and then 10 min even slower for cool off.  (BPM = beats per minute).

I finished my run a few minutes sooner than normal. I was really very excited!  This is one of those nights when everything clicked together.  Good temps, good humidity, good music, good run.

For anyone that doesn't know, Podrunner is free workout music.  You can use your iTunes to download to your iPod or go the DJ's webpage and download it in mp3 format.  There are several (3+ years worth) workout mixes to choose from.  You can choose fast workout music for tempo runs or slower mixes for the long slow runs.

For the first time in many many many months I ran a long run solo.  It was not as dull and mundane as I had dreaded.  Actually, it was a nice change of pace.  For starters, I got to sleep in and start my run at 8AM instead of 6AM.  The weather cooporated and didn't reach 85 until my last mile or two.  The humidity was low (for us) and the pace was comfortable.

I ran on base in some of the neighborhoods where the old condemed homes have been bulldozed and removed to make room for newer office buildings.  I came up on a deer and ran by her with about 15 feet between us.  She couldn't decide if she wanted to bolt or freeze.

Although this was an enjoyable run  I must admit that I enjoy running and having fellowship with fellow runners better.

Today I did my standard 5:15 AM run with my 68 y/o running partner. The recent weather has been perfect.  I'm not sure it was even 70 when we started and the humidty is under 100 percent.

We named a few more hills as well took on some new ones.  We ran a few of last weeks hills backwards so that the one we named "easy hill" really was.  However it really stunk once we got to the bottom. Easy hill has a twin brother named S.O.B.  That by the way stands for shortness of breath. :)

I've got to say that I've got mixed feelings about these early morning runs.  I'm planning my night and now I have an extra hour and some in my schedule becuase I don't need to workout/shower.  That said, I'm still a weeeeee bit tired from getting up at 4:45 this morning.

I think I'll try and catch some winks early this evening and try for another early run tomorrow.

I think my last entry mentioned that I was going to get up and run at the crack of dawn once again.  Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Apparently I wrote that while still flying high on endorphins.  Five AM came and went while I visited the nice little place called slumber land.

I had a nice 5.25 miles this evening.  I think the hilly routes and the agreeable temps are to credit the fact I was 20 seconds per mile faster today than my normal pace. I wasn't trying to go faster but the wonderful Garmin said I did.

What I didn't write on Sat log was the fact the last 3/4 of the last mile was crap.  I was extraordinarily winded after only 20 seconds of running. When I switched to walking to prevent my heart from bursting out of my chest I had the pain equivalent of a charlie horses in both calves.  After doing research on dehydration and over hydration (hypoatremia) I see that there are several symptoms that are similar between the two. I'm vexed at what my problem might have been.  I will say that my legs and arms felt very gritty from the salt.  Perhaps my sodium levels were down.  Is the best solution to hydrate well and pop electrolyte tablets?

The interesting thing about running is the fact that I've learned more of physiology of the body, medical conditions that can be caused by exercising, several types of aliments that end in "itis" and so much more.

I woke up early this morn before 5:15 and decided to do a few miles.  This is not my normal thought at 5:15AM but I went to bed early and couldn't go back to sleep.  I had a really nice 3 mile run at a pace about a min faster per mile than my normal weekday run.  Sweet.

that said, I'm a weeee bit tired sitting at work today.

I've been off line for a while and I've not posted.  Thanks Nevels, Burt, and KP for dropping me a comment on my last post.

I've been trying to do 30 miles a week.  I ran the Mystery Mountain Marathon...well actually the 12 miler.  Took a very nice spill and took the best blood award. I guess if you keep at it then eventually you do win something. :)

I helped a 19 y/o finish her first marathon. Her mom is a running buddy of mine.  She was a bit undertrained....longest run pre-race 15 miles.  We walked the last 4ish miles.  The next day I did a 50K put on by the Darkside Running Club.  It was a really great race.

I was volunteered/told (volun-told?) that I was to help co-RD the Bartram Forest 50k/26.2 miler which is held each year the Sat after Thanksgiving.  If you are every in middle GA this time of year they please come run with us.  The price is cheap $25 pre-reg and there is more food than you can imagine....fresh hot grill cheese, veggie soup, gumbo, pretzels, m&m, chips, home made baked goods, you get the point.  You also got a choice of race bags to boot.  wintertrailrun.net

I'm attempting my first 100 miler this weekend.  The race is the Bartrams 100.  It is also the exact same race course as the Bartram 50K held 2 weeks ago.  Several of the folks from my race above will be at this race as well.  I wish I felt more ready for this run.  There is a 100K option if I whimp out at the 62 mile mark.  I've been told the first 50 you run with your legs and the last 50 you run with your mind.  Is that a true statement Nevels??  My training has been less than desired for this race.  My hubby and I have done more traveling for work than planned for when my running sched was created.  I'm nervous as heck....and that is an understatement!

Originally i had planned to have pacers and since this race is just an hour from my house was able to line up running partners into different time slots.  Then things happen.  Someone got a girlfriend and will be traveling w/her.  Someone else got injured and is sidelined....you get the picture.   AAAGH!  I would be having a complete panic attack except I have found that being friends with hard-core runners does indeed have benefits.  My old Galloway running coach from VA will be flying in on Friday and will be running with me....the entire way!!  Talk about being a really good friend.

So in a nutshell, I've run some, trained some, and will be attempting something way more difficult and over my head than I should....but I'll try anyway.

Side note: I've already informed my boss that I will be taking a day off on Monday. :)

Awesome! Good luck Saturday...

As far as the "First 50 with legs, last 50 with mind," for the most part it's true, however you have to keep your mind in check the entire time. Don't let yourself get worked up early with thoughts like "if it hurts this bad now, how bad will it be later..." type thoughts, because if you feel bad at mile X, then you'll likely be feeling better by mile (X+Y), and typically Y is less than 5 (I tried to be a cool engineer and put the less than symbol, but the html doesn't like it...)

In any case, just work your way from aid station to aid station, and you'll be fine. Remember to enjoy yourself...

Again, good luck!

(Feel the jealousy emanating in your direction...)

My race was a series of unfortunate events.  I had a friend (much stronger runner) come out and join me.  He neglected to mention he was nursing a hamstring injury.  Around mile 22ish he asked if we could stop and walk.  I didn't know he meant the rest of the way.  I was really upset but kept it to myself.

My friend took about 25 min each loop to tend to his feet.  We were going so much slower than expected that I really was exceptionally upset. (Understatement).  At 5:30ish the sun went down and we were at the station loading up on food.  I had heard a participant say she lost her glasses so I went over to ask where on the trail she might thing they were.  I got back and couldn't find my partner.  So I figured he was in the rest room.  Nope.  He took back off on the trail.  90 min later he shows back up.  side note: I'm a big chicken and really don't like being on a trail in the pitch black alone.  I was more upset then I've ever been in years.  Since there was 32 hours to do this race in I had heard some 100K folks say they were going to a hotel room, catching some zzzzs and returning the next morning.  My chance of 100 mile was shot.  My attitude was in the crapper and I really didn't feel like being with my friend any longer.  Actually I would be very embarrassed if I shared my exact thoughts at that moment as there would be more swear words than not.

Next day I get back to the race and I have not motivation to even finish. The RD and my friend literal force me back on the trail and I finish the last 28 miles with my friend - walking.  I believe my finish time for a 100k was 31:55 ish. What a stinky finish.  That looks like a 5K finish time not a 100K finish time.

Later I did find out that my friend ripped off his toenail early on in the race.  Honestly, I wish he would have said to go on without him or drop out.  I really like my buddy and we've been really good friends for over 6 years.  That said, (being totally selfish) he was a total anchor this race. I wasn't really thinking I could finish up a whole 100 miles but I did think it was possible to reach the 75 mile mark.  That was my real goal.  Mostly I'm disappointed on how this turned out.  I've been waiting for this weekend for 3 years and it was awful....really awful.  Dang.

Well, on the plus side, it was a PR. :)  I think it will be a very easy PR to beat when I finally get the urge to do this once again....this time alone.  My friend can be invited to be my crew if he'd like but no more. :)

On a different note, I got to watch and run a few miles with a 100 miler participant in his last 3 miles.  Man, he looked like crap!  I guess that is what I would have looked like also.  Well the good news is that there is always next year!

Just found your report. Sounds like a tough race. I've learned to never agree to run with someone, especially on a trail race this long. Just too many things can happen, and you end up going much slower (since you go the pace of whomever is slower at the time). Hope you have a better experience next time.

From Little Engine That Could on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 14:57:43 from 68.15.209.4

Free half marathon!

No running today but I wanted to pass along a free race for those close by. The Columbus Road Runners are holding their annual free half marathon in January.  Here is the website: http://estartline.com/Search/event.aspx?event=0338ddf8-4aec-425d-9365-f10e858468ba.aspx

Summary:

5th Annual Red Nose Half Marathon Cost: FREE!!! Certified Course

Event Details:

This is the 5th annual Red Nose Half Marathon.  There will not be a full marathon this year so we can focus on the half marathon race.  The race is still free and but support like one of those high prices events.  The event will once again start in downtown Columbus, GA and will be run on a USATF Certified Course.  Hopefully it will not be as cold as last year but come out even if it is.  We had a great time last year.

Quick 4.5 miles at 5AM.  I would gripe about how cold it was but it was still warmer than the highs than most places around the country.

This was my first run since the race.  My Tuesday morning partner and I decided to do the “easy” hill route.  It was just good to get out moving on the street again. Nothing spectacular to report other than I had good company.  I guess anytime you can have someone agree to run with you at 5:00 AM you have good company.

If I don't post before Saturday, Merry Christmas folks!
